Eyelid Surgery / Blepharoplasty

Eyelid Surgery | Blepharoplasty | Santa Monica | Los AngelesBlepharoplasty can rejuvenate puffy, sagging or tired-looking eyes by removing excess fat, skin and muscle from the upper and lower eyelids. It may be performed for cosmetic reasons or to improve sight by lifting droopy eyelids out of the patient's field of vision. Blepharoplasty can be combined with BOTOX® treatments to raise the eyebrows or reduce the appearance of wrinkles, crow's feet or dark circles under the eyes.

This procedure is usually performed in our Los Angeles office under local anesthesia. Incisions are made along the eyelids in inconspicuous places (in the creases of the upper lids, and just below the lashes on the lower lids). The surgeon removes excess tissue through these incisions and then stitches them closed with fine sutures. In the case that no skin needs to be removed, the surgeon will likely perform a transconjunctival blepharoplasty, where the incision is made inside the lower eyelid and there are no visible scars. Stitches are removed after three or four days, and patients can resume wearing contact lenses after a few weeks.

Nasal Surgery / Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty, one of the most common plastic surgery procedures, is performed to reshape, reduce or augment a person’s nose, remove a hump, narrow nostril width, change the angle between the nose and the mouth, or to correct injury, birth defects, or other problems that affect breathing. Combining rhinoplasty with septoplasty and/or turbinate reduction can effectively treat certain breathing problems, such as nasal obstruction caused by a deviated septum or turbinate hypertrophy.

Rhinoplasty is an outpatient procedure performed under either local or general anesthesia. It may be performed using either an "open" or "closed" technique, depending on the extent of the procedure and each patient's individual goals. An open rhinoplasty involves an incision across the columella, the tissue between the nostrils, keeping scars on the underside of the nose. A closed procedure places incisions within the nostrils to completely hide scars after surgery. In both procedures the skin is lifted, the bone and cartilage sculpted, and the skin then redraped and sutured closed.

While the most significant changes will be noticeable right away, there may be some mild swelling that resolves over the next few months, after which the full benefits of the rhinoplasty procedure will be achieved. Patients with realistic goals for rhinoplasty are generally very happy with the new shape of their nose. The exact results depend on the patient's nasal bone and cartilage structure, facial shape, skin thickness and age.

Chin Augmentation / Mentoplasty

Chin Augmentation / Mentoplasty< | Santa Monica | Los AngelesAlthough many people do not notice it, a weak chin can significantly affect facial appearance, causing the nose to look larger or the neck to look loose. Chin augmentation is often performed to provide a more balanced facial appearance and create a chin that is stronger, wider or longer, depending on each patient’s individual goals. Also known as mentoplasty, chin augmentation is often performed in conjunction with rhinoplasty or other facial procedures in order to achieve optimal results.

During the mentoplasty procedure, an implant made of silicone or another soft, flexible material is inserted into the chin through a small incision placed either under the chin or in the mouth. The implant may be placed into a pocket or secured to the bone with screws for long-lasting results. After the procedure, most patients can return to work and other regular activities the next day. Chin augmentation is considered a safe procedure with few risks, which can be further reduced by choosing an experienced surgeon to perform your procedure.

Facial Implants

The placement of a facial implant is a safe and effective procedure used to augment certain areas of the face or to restore volume lost as a result of aging or weight loss.  Facial implants can also be used to help provide harmony to the facial features and to enhance the results of other facial procedures, such as a chin implant placed at the same time as rhinoplasty.

During this procedure, a soft implant material is inserted under the skin to enhance the cheeks, chin, jaw or other area of the face.  This is accomplished through incisions that are placed in inconspicuous locations to minimize scarring, such as inside the mouth, under the chin or under the lower eyelid.  A pocket is then created for placement of the implant, which is attached to the bone or soft tissue.  Facial implants are placed as an outpatient procedure in our Los Angeles area office and performed under either local or general anesthesia.

Reconstructive Skin Flaps and Grafts

Reconstructive Skin Flaps and Grafts | Santa Monica | Los AngelesMany patients with facial wounds seek reconstructive treatment after an injury, disease or surgery to restore the appearance and function of the skin around lips, nose, eyelids and other prominent areas of the face and neck. These treatments can be performed to remove unsightly scars, close large or complex wounds, and expand contracted areas of skin or tissue that have developed as a result of scar contractures.

Skin grafts involve obtaining skin from an inconspicuous site elsewhere on the body, which is then used to cover or reconstruct a facial wound. Flaps involve similar treatment, but may also include transplantation of the underlying muscle or bone, and may stay attached to original blood vessels or reestablish the blood supply to nearby facial or neck vessels using microsurgical techniques.

These treatments help to reduce or eliminate the appearance of scars and expedite the healing process so that patients do not have to live with unsightly and often disfiguring wounds on their face. Your doctor will determine which type of treatment is best for you after a thorough evaluation of your condition.
